Electrical Safety on the Road

March 10, 2026

If you ever find yourself in a vehicle accident involving a downed line, pad mount transformer, or other electrical equipment, follow these steps to stay safe:

  1. Call 9-1-1 immediately. Report the presence of a downed line or electrical equipment to emergency responders.
  2. Stay inside your vehicle. Do not exit until professional electric utility workers confirm it is safe.
  3. Warn others. Alert passengers and bystanders to stay away from the scene.
  4. Exit only as a last resort. If your vehicle is on fire or emitting smoke, leave carefully by crossing your arms over your chest, jump from the vehicle without touching it, and hop with both feet together, as far away as possible.
Watch Mary’s story from our partners Safe Electricity.org and see how staying calm, remaining in your vehicle, and waiting for trained utility professionals can make all the difference in a dangerous situation.
