Efficient Living: New Year, New Habits

December 31, 2024

Is your New Year’s resolution to save energy and lower your monthly bills? Small changes around your home can significantly enhance energy efficiency throughout the year. Here are some detailed tips to help you achieve your energy-saving goals:

Find and Fix Air Leaks: Air leaks can occur around windows, doors, and even walls, allowing warm air to escape your home. Conduct a thorough inspection to identify these leaks and seal them with caulk or weather stripping. Not only will this keep your home at a comfortable temperature, but it will also reduce the workload on your furnace, leading to lower energy consumption.

Check Windows and Door Frames: Airflow around windows and door frames can contribute significantly to energy loss. During your inspection, look for gaps or cracks where air can leak in or out. In addition to caulking and adding weather stripping, consider installing energy-efficient window treatments, such as thermal curtains, that can further reduce heat loss.

Know Your Energy Usage: Understanding your energy usage patterns is crucial for effective energy management. Review your electricity and gas bills from the past 12 months to determine your average monthly consumption. This information can help you identify periods of higher usage and areas where you can make adjustments.

Flip the Switch: Remember to turn off lights when leaving a room and unplug chargers and electronics that are not in use. Many devices still consume energy when they're plugged in, even if they are turned off—this is known as “phantom load.” To make it more convenient, consider using power strips that can easily be switched off.

Close Window Coverings: On colder days, closing or lowering window coverings can help block out chilly drafts and retain heat within your home. Utilizing blackout curtains or insulated shades can enhance this effect further.

By implementing these strategies, you can make a significant impact on your energy savings while also creating a more comfortable living environment. Start with one or two tips and gradually incorporate more for ongoing improvements!
