Heat Pump Rebate

Installing a new high-efficiency heat pump can save you money and earn you a rebate on your CWLP electric bill.

The Heat Pump Rebate is available to CWLP electric customers who install qualifying air-source or geothermal heat pumps in their new or existing residential or commercial properties.1 (Any structure that is not owner-occupied, including apartment complexes, retirement facilities and office buildings, is considered a commercial property for purposes of this rebate program.) This rebate does not apply to water loop or packaged heat pump systems.2

The amount of the rebate depends on the heat pump's cooling capacity, its cooling efficiency (both its EER and SEER), and whether or not it is an air-source or geothermal system.

If your heat pump is: Your rebate will be:
n an air-source system with an EER less than 12.5 or an SEER less than 15.0 $10.00 per kBTUh3
n an air-source system with an EER equal to or greater than 12.5 AND an SEER equal to or greater than 15.0 $21.00 per kBTUh3
n a geothermal heat pump system $45.00 per kBTUh3

Cooling capacities and efficiencies will be verified through the Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) Directory of Certified Unitary Equipment. In addition, CWLP reserves the right to make on-site inspections of heat pump installations before granting rebates.

For residential installations, the maximum allowable cooling capacity per heat pump unit is 72,000 BTUh (72 kBTUh; 6 tons3). There is no limit on the number of units that can be installed at a residence.

For commercial installations, there is also no limit on the number of units that can be installed. However, the total maximum cooling capacity per property that will be eligible for rebate is 480,000 BTUh (480 kBTUh; 40 tons3), and each customer's maximum annual rebate will be capped at $15,000.

Rebates will be granted either as bill credits or checks. Customers opting to receive their rebate in check form will have any outstanding balance due to CWLP, plus a 10% processing fee, deducted from the rebate amount.

Funding for the Heat Pump Rebate program is limited and available on a first-come/first-served basis to CWLP metered electric customers. The program is subject to change without notice.

In addition to installing a qualifying heat pump system, you must complete and return a Heat Pump Rebate Application to CWLP within one year of the heat pump's installation date. The form must be signed by both you and your heat pump contractor and be accompanied by a detailed proof of purchase (preferably a sales receipt). You can download a copy of the Heat Pump Rebate Application form from this website or obtain a hard copy of the application by contacting the CWLP Energy Services Office by phone at 789-2070 or by email.

1 This Heat Pump Rebate program applies to qualifying systems installed on or after October 1, 2009. If you installed a first-time or replacement heat pump system prior to October 1, 2009, you might be eligible for a rebate under a previous program. Contact the CWLP Energy Services Office at 789-2070 or nrgxprts@cwlp.com for details.
2 New commercial water loop systems will be considered for rebate eligibility on a case-by-case basis. Contact the Energy Services Office at 789-2070 or nrgxprts@cwlp.com for more information.
3 One kBTUh equals 1,000 British thermal units (BTUs) per hour. Each "ton" of cooling capacity built into a heat pump or air conditioner equals 12 kBTUh (12,000 BTUh). Residential central cooling systems typically range in size from two to four tons of cooling capacity (24 to 48 kBTUh). A three-ton (36 kBTUh) air-source heat pump with an EER equal to or greater than 12 and an SEER equal to or greater than 15 would qualify for a $756 rebate ($21 x 36 kBTUh).
