CWLP offers three on-site services to help customers discover how to make their homes or business facilities more energy efficient and comfortable. They are: the Money-Back Home Energy Audit; our Technical Assistance program; and the CityLights Commercial Lighting Audit.

The Money-Back Home Energy Audit can help CWLP's residential electric customers become more energy efficient in two ways. First, the audit, along with its accompanying blower door test, will identify the sources of unwanted heat loss and gain in your home and help you determine the most cost-effective ways to fix them. On top of that, it can also help you better afford to make many of the improvements recommended in your audit report.

To take advantage of the money-back offer, which is available to customers receiving the home energy audit on or after October 1, 2007, simply make any of the improvements recommended in your audit report and request a free follow-up audit within one year of your original audit date. As soon as your follow-up audit is complete, we will refund the $25 fee you paid for the original audit. In addition, the money you spend making certain efficiency improvements—up to $25—could qualify for a 100% rebate.

The Money-Back Home Energy Audit takes about two hours to complete in the "average" home. The first step of the audit involves an attic-to-basement inspection of your home, during which the Energy Expert will check the existence, condition, quantity and type of the home's various energy features, including insulation, caulk, weatherstripping, doors, windows, and lighting and other appliances.

The next step is the blower door test, which helps identify sources of air infiltration that can cause air to unintentionally enter and escape the house. After the audit is complete, the Energy Expert will provide you with a customized packet of efficiency products selected based on the needs identified by your audit.

In addition to reviewing the findings with you as the audit and blower door test are in progress, the Energy Expert will write a report that details all of the improvement recommendations and provides savings estimates achievable from each.

The $25 audit fee will be added to your CWLP electric bill after your written report has been issued. The fee also covers the cost of a follow-up audit, made at your request, to check the success of the efficiency improvements you make. As noted above, if you follow-through with any of the recommendations in your audit report and request the free follow-up audit within one year of the audit date, you could be eligible for a refund of your audit fee.

The audit is available to anyone owning or residing in a residential property that receives metered electric service from CWLP. Our pamphlet, The Money-Back Home Energy Audit, explains the audit in more detail. CWLP electric customers can order their free pamphlet, learn more about the audit or schedule an audit appointment by contacting the CWLP Energy Services Office. You can also order the pamphlet online.

The Technical Assistance (TA) program offered by CWLP is designed to help customers who are experiencing efficiency-related problems in their homes or businesses or who have any type of energy efficiency question. TAs, which are free of charge to CWLP electric customers, can be conducted on-site, over the phone, by mail or by email, depending on the circumstances and needs of the customer. Some TAs are investigatory in nature, such as those provided to customers who call with high-bill complaints. Some are educational in nature, such as those that teach customers how to use automatic setback thermostats and provide advice about insulation, weatherstripping, caulking, choosing a heating and cooling contractor, and making economic comparisons of energy systems. Our Energy Experts can even help you design energy efficiency into the structure when you're ready to build a new home or commercial facility. To learn more about or to take advantage of our Technical Assistance program, contact the CWLP Energy Services Office.

The CityLights Commercial Lighting Audit program is designed to help business customers who are looking for ways to improve the lighting in existing buildings. The focus of this free service is two-fold: to help customers select lighting systems that will operate with the greatest possible energy efficiency while providing optimal illumination for the  tasks conducted in each space. A lighting auditor will survey your building and discuss your lighting needs with you and then put together a lighting retrofit plan, complete with estimated purchase and installation costs and anticipated annual savings compared to your current lighting operating costs. To learn more about the CityLights Commercial Lighting Audit, contact the CityLights program administrator.
