The CWLP electric system's transmission network consists of lines and associated substations operating at voltages of 138 kV and 69 kV.

The 138 kV portion of the transmission network currently includes approximately 63 circuit miles of overhead lines forming a complete loop around the system's service area. The purpose of the 138 kV network is to provide:

  • generator outlet capacity for CWLP's Dallman 3 and Dallman 4 units and the Interstate combustion turbine,

  • bulk power supply to the lower voltage portion of the transmission network,

  • a direct supply to some distribution substation transformers, and

  • interconnections with other utilities.

The 138 kV transmission lines presently serve eight of the system's substations or switching stations, plus the village of Chatham, Illinois.

A portion of the 69 kV transmission network was originally installed in 1956, and now consists of approximately 65 circuit miles of overhead lines serving 23 distribution substations. There are five 80,000 KVA transformers connecting the 138kV system to the 69 kV system.

As a result of its 1967 acquisition of CILCO's remaining Springfield electric customer base, the Electric Division also operates approximately three circuit miles of 34.5 kV transmission lines and one distribution substation. This portion of the system is supplied by a 34.5 kV line emanating from the Eastdale Substation where the voltage is transformed from 69 kV. These lines primarily served the Cargill manufacturing plant, which is now closed. Although the lines are still in service, they currently carry little load.

The system's distribution network consists of approximately 564 circuit miles of overhead 12.47 kV and approximately 393 circuit miles of underground 12.47 kV facilities.
