Electric Meter Replacement Project Seeks to Improve Service
Reliability
CWLP electric crews are in the process of replacing over 65,000 customer
electric meters with new automated meter reading (AMR) models. Once the
multi-year project, which will also entail the installation of new
networking hardware and software, is complete, the utility will be able to
read meters from a remote location. This
will improve the utility’s ability to obtain timely and accurate readings
for all customers while expending fewer man-hours to do so. In
addition, the new equipment will ultimately enable CWLP dispatchers to
detect service outages at the individual customer level, which will expedite
service restoration efforts.
Each meter replacement typically takes just a few minutes to complete,
during which time the customer will be without power. Before replacing a
meter at a residence, the crew will knock on the front door to alert anyone
who might be at home that the work is about to begin. Crews will not need to
enter the home unless the meter is located inside the house.
All crews working on this project will carry City of Springfield identity
cards and drive CWLP vehicles. Customers are urged not to open their doors
to anyone claiming to be a CWLP employee who can't produce an ID card. Any
suspicious behavior should be reported to the Springfield Police Department.
