CWLP's generating capacity is provided by five coal-fired steam turbine generators (totaling 448 megawatts [MW]), one dual-fuel natural gas- and oil-fired combustion turbine (128 MW), two oil-fired combustion turbines (totaling 38 MW), and three oil-fired diesel generating units (totaling 6 MW).  CWLP's total summer maximum net generating capability is 620 MW.

CWLP is currently in the process of constructing a new 200-MW coal-fired power plant that is expected to be completed in 2010.

In addition to the power self-generated by CWLP, the utility contracts for wind power from FPL Energy.

In 2007, the utility generated 2,045,609 megawatt-hours (MWH) of electricity and had system purchases of 232,429 MWH, for a total system input of 2,278,038 MWH. This served a native energy requirement of 1,940,605 MWH, as well as system wholesale sales of 336.198 MWH.

Of the 232,429 MWH purchased in 2007, 22,857 MWH was in the form of wind energy purchased from the Hancock Farm in Iowa. The average wind capacity factor was 26.01%. CWLP paid $946,753 ($41.43/MWH) for the wind energy and sold it for $927,787 ($40.59/MWH), for a net cost to the utility of $18,966 ($0.83/MWH).

In 2007, the five coal-fired units consumed a total of 1,133,023 tons of coal, 100% of which was mined in Illinois. All units consumed over 341,910 gallons of fuel oil and 2,388,150 dekatherms of natural gas. In addition, 14,329 tons of obsolete seed corn were burned in the two Lakeside and two of the Dallman boilers. In all, 0.76% of CWLP's generation was provided by renewable biomass energy in 2007.

In 2007, renewable energy from wind and biomass (seed corn) accounted for 1.95% of the utility's net generation and 2.06% of its native energy use.

IIn 2007, CWLP's summer peak demand was 434 MW, set on Wednesday, August 15 at 4 p.m., when the outdoor temperature was 97°F and the heat index was 106°F. This represents a 3.8% reduction from the record peak of 451 MW set in 2006. CWLP's Winter 2007/2008 peak was 302 MW. This occurred on January 2, 2008 at 7 p.m., when the outdoor temperature was 12° F.
