Dallman 4 Wins
Prestigious Awards
from POWER Magazine and Power Engineering Magazine
CWLP's recently commissioned Dallman 4 Power Station has been recognized
as one of the world's best new power plants by two prestigious industry
publications, POWER magazine and Power Engineering Magazine.
The August 2009 announcement by POWER magazine that it had named
Dallman 4 as its 2009 Plant of the Year was followed in early December by
news that Power Engineering had selected Springfield's newest and
most ambitious generating plant as its best coal-fired power plant project
of 2009.
POWER magazine chose Dallman 4 for its honor out of more than 40
power plants of various primary fuel sources that went online world-wide
during 2009. Power Engineering recognizes some of the world's best
projects in four major categories: coal-fired, gas-fired, nuclear and
renewable.
Both magazines cited the city's negotiation of an "unprecedented
[environmental] agreement with the Sierra Club" that ensured construction of
the plant would be allowed to move forward without costly and time-consuming
litigation as one of the primary factors in their decisions. The agreement
ensured that, not only would Dallman 4 employ the most state-of-the-art
environmental control systems, but that CWLP would make environmental
improvements to its existing coal-fired units, add solar energy to its
energy portfolio, and expand its offering of programs aimed at helping
residential and commercial customers make their homes and facilities more
energy efficient.
POWER magazine lauded the utility for "assembling a tightly integrated team"
and Power Engineering went on to note that the team was able to
overcome numerous obstacles and still complete the project "seven months
ahead of schedule and within budget."
The operating cost savings and reliability of service Dallman 4 is
expected to provide were other key deciding points for the two magazines.
According to POWER magazine, the 200-MW Dallman 4 will allow CWLP "to
easily meet Springfield's summer peak demand and still have plenty of
capacity to sell into the electricity market. Not only does Springfield no
longer need to purchase expensive electricity from the open market," the
article continues, "but it also now could very well be one of the
lower-priced suppliers in that market." Power Engineering concurred,
saying, "because
of its high efficiency, energy produced by Dallman 4 is expected to provide
$12 million in savings in its first year of operation."
POWER magazine, which has
been published for over 125 years, is one of the most recognized and
respected information sources for the power generation industry.
Established in 1896, Power Engineering magazine provides readers
with the critical information needed to remain efficient and competitive in
today's market. For three years in a row, it has been named the most read
and useful magazine in the power industry.
