CWLP is committed to being a good neighbor and involved member of our community. Part of our mission involves reaching out to the community in a variety of ways to provide educational services and information that will benefit our customers and neighbors. Our outreach programs include tours of our water and electric plants; a residential customer newsletter, called Dispatch; and our cooperation with the Springfield School District’s Partners in Education program; and our electrical safety program for local school children.

Tours

NOTE:  As part of efforts to reduce the risk of terroristic acts against CWLP, officials have halted public tours of the utility's power and water plants until further notice.

Bill Inserts

Periodically, CWLP includes informational inserts—including the quarterly ESO Update—in our customer's monthly billing envelopes to keep them informed of special utility news, programs or services.

Partners in Education

Since the 1993/94 school year, CWLP has participated in the School District 186 Partners in Education Program which pairs corporate members of the local community with individual schools. Over the years, the utility has offered assistance to its partner, Hazel Dell Elementary School, in a variety of ways. These include making it possible for employees to serve as tutor/mentors to Hazel Dell students; sponsoring an Adopt-a-Classroom program in which employees work with individual teachers to provide support for special projects or events in their classrooms; organizing brown-bag lunch lectures for students; and helping to establish the Bird and Butterfly Garden for which Hazel Dell is widely known.

Electrical Safety Program

CWLP offers an electrical safety program to Springfield's public and private elementary schools. The Power Town Safety Program combines video and live presentations to educate children in grades K-5 about electrical safety.  The program, which is also available to other youth-oriented organizations (such as Summer Scope and other summer day care programs), lasts approximately 45 minutes and can be presented to individual classes or school assemblies.  Teachers or school or program administrators interested in scheduling an Electrical Safety Program should call the program manager at 757-8520, ext. 2266, or email publicinformation@cwlp.com

Arbor Day

Each April, CWLP partners with a local school to celebrate Arbor Day. Teaming with the Mayor's Office, the Springfield Department of Public Works and Nelson Tree Service, the utility works with the schools to help teachers build the study of trees into their curricula. CWLP donates a tree(s) to be planted on the grounds of its school partner. Nelson Tree Service provides financial assistance that allows the utility to sponsor student art or writing contests or science-related field trips for the school. The utility and its school partner hold a special assembly and tree planting ceremony on the last Friday in April (Arbor Day). Past partners in the utility’s Arbor Day celebration include Hazel Dell Elementary, Iles Elementary, Vachel Lindsay Elementary, Lincoln Magnet Middle School, and Carl Sandburg Elementary. For Arbor Day 2005, our partner is Lee Elementary School.
