The process of transmitting and distributing drinking water to our
customers begins as the clean water leaves the filtration gallery of the Water
Purification Plant.
From the Water Purification Plant, the water flows to two underground
"clearwell" storage tanks on the grounds of the lakeside plant complex. These
tanks, which have a combined capacity of 6 million gallons, hold the water for
approximately four hours before it is pumped out to the city and surrounding communities
via four primary, 16- to 36-inch diameter transmission mains
and four high-service pumps. This transmission system has a combined capacity of 65
million gallons per day (mgd). On a typical day, however, only about a third
of this capacity is called upon. On average, the utility treats more than 22 mgd. The maximum
amount ever treated in one day, 39.7 mgd, occurred on July 23, 1999. From the transmission mains, the water is further conveyed through six- to twelve-inch distribution mains to CWLP's Springfield customers. For more
information about the utility's distribution system, select any of the underlined topics
below. If a topic is not underlined, it is not yet accessible. The CWLP website is
undergoing continuous updating and expansion, so if the subject you are interested in is
not yet available, please check back soon. WATER MAINS
