Tips for Conducting a Successful Site Search

When using a combination of key words in your site search, how you connect those words will make a difference in the number, type and quality of matches the search engine finds. Connecting key words with AND, OR, NOT, or a set of parentheses or quotation marks – as well as using no type of connector at all – can give you very different search results, as the examples below indicate.

Let’s say you want to search the website for information about CWLP’s lake-area parks and decide to use the words lake parks.

If you type: lake parks
You will get: all documents containing references to either "lake" or "parks." So you might end up with matches that discuss the lake but not its parks, or that refer to parks other than those in the lake area.
If you type: lake or parks
You will get: same as above.
If you type: lake and parks
You will get: all documents containing references to both "lake" and "parks."
If you type: "lake and parks"
You will get: all documents containing the complete phrase lake and parks.
If you type: lake and not parks
You will get: all documents containing references to "lake" – except those that also refer to "parks."
If you type: (lake and not parks) and boating
You will get:  all documents containing reference to both "lake" – except those that also refer to "parks" – and "boating."
To find all matches to a particular word (such as electric) and its variations (electricity, electrical, electrically), type the word followed by an asterisk (electric*).
